Saree Care Guide: How to Wash & Store Silk, Georgette, Chiffon | Achinova

A good saree can last for decades if it is looked after well. The rules differ by fabric, so here is a simple care guide for silk, georgette, chiffon, cotton and embellished sarees.

Silk and zari sarees

  • Dry-clean, especially the first few times.
  • Never soak or wring zari borders; moisture can tarnish metallic thread.
  • Apply perfume and deodorant before dressing, not on the fabric.
  • Store wrapped in a soft cotton or muslin cloth. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
  • Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creases.

Georgette and chiffon sarees

  • Hand wash gently in cold water with mild detergent.
  • Do not wring or twist; press water out between towels.
  • Dry in shade, flat or on a padded hanger.
  • Iron on low with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.
  • Embellished pieces (sequins, stones, heavy thread) are best dry-cleaned.

Cotton sarees, kurtis and co-ords

  • Wash the first time separately in cold water; some colours can bleed.
  • Turn embroidered and printed pieces inside out.
  • Dry in shade to protect colour.
  • Iron while slightly damp for crisp results.

Storing sarees

Keep sarees in a cool, dry, dark place. Add neem leaves, cedar blocks or lavender sachets to keep insects away, and air each saree occasionally. Store heavy sarees flat or folded loosely rather than hanging, which can stretch the fabric.

Removing small stains

Blot – never rub – and treat quickly. For oil or food stains on silk or embellished sarees, avoid home remedies and take the piece to a dry-cleaner at once, pointing out the stain.

Always check the label

Care instructions on the label or product page take priority over general tips, since blends and finishes vary.
